Dr. Monika Messmer obtained her Diploma in Agrobiology and her PhD on the genetic diversity of maize inbred lines using molecular markers at the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim in Germany. In 1993 she joined the wheat and spelt breeding department of the Swiss Research Station for Agroecology in Zürich-Reckenholz in Switzerland. She was involved in the identification of makers linked to monogenic and polygenic inherited resistance against leaf rust and septoria glume blotch and the application of marker assisted selection in the running breeding programs. In 2000 Monika Messmer joined the private start up company VitaPlant AG which develops and optimizes plant based medicinal products from the seed up to the pre-clinically tested standard extract. As head of the R&D Agro unit she was responsible for the breeding programs and the domestication and cultivation of various medicinal plant species as well as for international contract cultivation. In 2009 she joint the Research Institute for Organic Agriculture (FiBL) in Frick, Switzerland, and is responsible for plant breeding and cultivar testing. She is involved in several European (NUE-CROPS, HealthyMinorCereals, DIVERSIFOOD, LIVESEED, ReMIX) and national breeding projects and is leading the participatory organic cotton breeding project Green Cotton in India. She is head of the European Consortium for Organic Plant Breeding (ECO-PB), member of the IFOAM EU Seed expert group and the IFOAM International Seed Platform, and heading the EUCARPIA working group on breeding for plant microbe interaction.
